The System Architect will lead efforts for the engineering of critical operational support systems. In this capacity, he/she will be charged with on-going architecture, design and integration of both purchased and developed solutions that enable operational efficiencies for our internal and external customers.
The System Architect is accountable for design and assurance for software, hardware and communications infrastructure for all components relating to mission-critical OSS management systems. The Technical Director must understand business and technical requirements, and ensure that the design and implementation of the OSS solution meets the requirements. He or she must also keep abreast of industry knowledge and the capabilities of leading and emerging vendors. Responsibilities include gathering requirements; formulating and obtaining sponsorship; documenting technical vision and strategy; designing solutions involving complex system interaction; working closely with program teams on designs and implementations; advising management on technology issues; developing an in depth understanding of processes; communicating and coordinating technical initiatives inside and outside the company.
The System Architect will work closely with OSS Program Management, OSS Integration & Development and OSS Product Support groups to provide technical guidance, standards adherence, and ensure quality products are delivered on time.
Key areas of responsibility:
Collaborate on short-, medium, and long-term OSS architecture plans.
Drive prioritization and delivery of architecture components and system designs.
Verify existing designs and identify any gaps between business requirements and the designs of current and future OSS and incident/change/problem management systems and configuration databases.
Design and recommend new solutions to fill existing gaps and meet business needs.
Manage project deliverables and costs with high accuracy and transparency.
Understand, communicate, and help manage project and design risks.
Work across all groups in the Engineering and Development (E&D) and the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) organization to ensure technical congruence between all aspects of technology initiatives and OSS.
Mentor and assist engineers within OSS Integration & Development and OSS Product Support groups.
Identify and prioritize technical, functional and operational requirements for new integrated solution sets from key stakeholder groups.
Design and implement OSS products with a focus on using commercially available products while developing customized products for business differentiation; research and evaluation of new OSS tools.
Responsible for the creation of architectural patterns, standards and reference architectures; responsible for documenting system design.
Required experience and skills:
Seven years experience as a system and /or network administrator using enterprise versions of Red Hat Linux, Windows Server, Sun Solaris, VMWare, Cisco and 3rd-party management tools.
Seven years technology experience with OSS and infrastructure implementations in the areas of fault management, incident/problem management, backup management, storage management, network and system management, provisioning, automation and billing.
Strong experience in SNMP, syslog, CIM, and related alerting and management protocols/standards.
Direct experience with large scale installations and administration of some or all of the following: IBM Netcool, BMC Remedy/Atrium, EMC/SMARTS, RealOps, Opsware, WysDM.
Direct experience designing globally resilient systems, including active-active and active-passive systems, distance and regional clustering, storage replication and synchronization, hardened IP networks, load-balancing hardware and software, and general and specific failover/failback techniques.
Direct experience analyzing and modeling system and network performance and capacity.
Understanding of quality assurance techniques and ability to apply them to infrastructure design and test.
Excellent written and communication skills required.
Ability to inspire and build consensus.
Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Visio, Powerpoint or similar tools.
Desired Skills:
ITIL, CISCO or other applicable certifications are desirable.
Programming experience in Perl, Java, C/C++, and/or other languages is desirable.
Understanding of data architecture and data modeling.
Familiarity with database administration is desirable.
Knowledge of BSS/OSS system interaction is desirable.
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related area, or equivalent experience.
